Infrastructure Malaysian team meets TN CM Our Bureau
CHENNAI, July 29 A HIGH-level delegation led by the Malaysian Public Works Minister, Mr Datto Samivelu, held preliminary discussions with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, on various infrastructure projects including establishment of an `Administrative City' involving shifting of the Secretariat to an alternate location on the East Coast Road. Mr Samivelu met reporters following the meeting with the Chief Minister, and said that a preliminary report had been submitted to the State Government on the shifting of the Secretariat. The project envisaged provision of working and residential facilities to over four lakh individuals. However, the Tamil Nadu Government will have to fine tune the details and decide on the exact size of the project. The Malaysian Government has the knowledge based on a similar exercise it had implemented while shifting its headquarters from Kuala Lumpur to a location 25 km away, he said. The Minister also said that the outline of the Colachel Port project was also ready. The details of the nature of the investment including the share by Tamil Nadu Government, Malaysia and the private sector partner had to be finalised, Mr Samivelu said. The enthusiasm shown by the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa regarding the shifting of the administration to a known location indicated that a final shape to the project could emerge in six months, he said. It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had announced during the Budget sessions the intention to shift the Secretariat to a new and more spacious location on the East Coast Road. The present location at Fort St George was cramped with most of the area occupied by the defence personnel. The new location would include officials and residential complexes, she had announced.
