Textiles Textile task force calls for chambers' views K.R. Srivats
NEW DELHI, July 29 THE Inter-Ministerial Task Force constituted by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to address the fiscal, labour and investment issues concerning the textile industry has asked apex industry associations to submit their view points and possible action plans on these issues before the end of this month. "Industry has been asked to prepare itself for making a focused presentation in August specifying the fiscal, labour and other issues requiring immediate attention of the Government. Before the presentation, the three apex chambers of FICCI, Assocham and CII have been asked by Task Force to submit a note on the subject by this month end,'' industry sources said. The Inter-Ministerial Task Force, chaired by the Secretary (Textiles), has nominees of Secretary (Revenue), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs and Director-General of Foreign Trade and Director-General of National Council for Applied Economic Research besides nominees from the Prime Minister's office (PMO) and Cabinet Secretariat. The Union Textiles Secretary had at the first meeting of the task force in June end expressed his view that States having major textile units could be permitted to amend specific provision in labour laws, especially for apparel parks and EOUs, even if comprehensive amendments to labour laws may not be feasible right now. Noting that weaving and processing sector happened to be the weakest link in the textile industry, the Textiles Secretary had stressed the need to pursue with measures that would address the distortions created by certain fiscal policy approaches of the past.
