Govt staff demonstrate against privatisation

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, July 29

A NATIONWIDE demonstration was organised on Monday by the Joint Platform of Action of Government & Associate Services Employees' Organisation against privatisation of Central Government organisation.

According to Mr Achinta Sinha, National Convener of the organisation, Central Government employees from all over the country participated in the programme.

"Information we have got indicates demonstrations are going on in Patna, Allahabad, Moradabad, Kanpur and Delhi, apart from Kolkata. The response from Delhi is significant because this is the first time that Central Government employees located in the Capital have responded to such a call," Mr Sinha said.

While Central Government employees took a day's leave to participate in the demonstration programme, State Government employees organised a token protest.

The organisation is also protesting against the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development's move to make the city-based National Library an autonomous organisation. The Government move is based on the National Library of India Act, 1976. Though the law was passed more than 25 years back, this is the first time the Government is trying to implement it.
