Trade & Labour Unions Info-Tech - Telecommunications Don't privatise cell service, say BSNL employees Our Bureau
KOCHI, July 29 THE BSNL Employees Union (Kerala Circle) has demanded that the operations of the BSNL mobile services should not be handed over to private agencies. Mr R.N. Padanair, State Secretary, said that the union had been consistently demanding commencement of mobile services, adding that despite having all the background facilities and expertise to run such services, BSNL has decided to entrust the operations to private agencies. "BSNL has a large number of technically qualified senior officers, and for marketing and collection purposes, other employees could be deployed. The company also has its own buildings. Given this situation, it could provide mobile services at a lower rate." The private agencies, which did not have such facilities, would not able to provide the services at such a lower rate, he added. The official who was responsible for starting mobile operations in Kerala has been suddenly transferred to North India by the BSNL board, Mr Padanair said. "The current moves are aimed at delaying the commencement of mobile services here, apart from facilitating the private sector to reap the benefits."
