HYDERABAD, July 29

HYDERABAD will host the India International Sports Expo-2002 ( SPEX 2002), a five-day exhibition for the sports goods industry, equipment, allied products and services to be held during November 20-24 at the `games village'.

The exhibition will coincide with the 32nd National Games to be held during the second half of November. Major industry players from the Rs 206-crore sports goods manufacturers are expected to take part in the event, according to Mr Pradeep Deviah, Chairman and CEO of Deviah & Associates Ltd (PDAL), Bangalore.

The event is being organised by PDA Trade Fairs, a division of PDAL with the cooperation of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), which is organising the National Games, for which huge infrastructure facilities are being constructed in the city.

The focus of SPEX 2002 would be on international and national governing bodies, sports federations and clubs, sports facilities operators, infrastructure providers, manufacturers, importers, distributors of equipment, medicine and fitness, Mr Deviah told presspersons.

A contingent of international participants of sports goods industry and exhibitors from different countries, including multinational corporations are expected to participate. SAAP has developed the `games village', with infrastructure facilities to host the National Games events.

The Indian sports goods industry manufactures nearly 318 items and the country is one of the largest exporters of inflatable balls, cricket bats, hockey sticks and protective sports gear and equipment. The major markets are the US, the UK, Australia, Germany and France.

The theme of the exhibition is `supporting the spirit of sports'. With nearly 7,500 athletes, 2,500 sports administrators and several thousand visitors expected to participate and witness the various events, the organisers expect a good response, according to Mr K.K. Pai, CEO of SPEX 2002.
