Wasteland growth: TN extends time for project submission

Corporates, including small companies, co-operative societies for cultivation of agro-based products are eligible to apply for long-term lease of wastelands for commercial cultivation.

CHENNAI, July 28

THE Tamil Nadu Government has extended the deadline for submission of projects under the wasteland development scheme to August 31, according to a Government press release.

Earlier, the deadline had been fixed for July 27, and more than 1,500 applications have been received for the project announced early in July. There had been widespread demand for the deadline to be extended since more potential entrepreneurs had evinced interest in taking on long-term lease the wasteland made available under the project, according to the press release.

It may be recalled that during the first week of this month the Tamil Nadu Government had approved the operational guidelines for sanction of lease to corporates and had invited applications from those interested in investing in commercial agriculture and agri-business under the comprehensive wasteland development programme.

Under the programme, corporates, including small companies, co-operative societies for cultivation of agro-based products are eligible to apply for long-term lease of wastelands for commercial cultivation.

The Agriculture Department had said that the wasteland development programme envisaged cultivation of high-value horticulture crops in fallow and wastelands and enable establishment of processing units for forward integration.

The applicants can select a suitable block of land for development to promote integrated development. The Government will provide on leasehold basis contiguous blocks of wastelands for a 30-year period to corporate houses, which could opt for a maximum of 1,000 acres of wasteland.

However, larger acreages would be considered on a case-to-case basis. Co-operative societies and small companies would be eligible to apply for 20 acres or less.
