Tourism India safe for global tourists: Jagmohan Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, July 24 THE Union Minister for Tourism, Mr Jagmohan, today called on international tourism bodies to do their bit to correct the wrong impression that India is not a safe tourist destination. "This is not the first time that India has suffered due to disinformation being spread about the country. India is a big country and border tensions will not affect tourist movement in other parts of the country. It is time that the international tourism bodies do their part to focus on the fact that India is safe," the Minister said on Wednesday. The Minister was responding to statements made earlier by the Deputy Director-General of the World Travel Organisation (WTO), Dr David J. de Villiers, and its regional representative. Dr de Villiers, during a presentation, said that the WTO expected tourism growth to return by the end of the year but added that uncertainty remained in a few places like between India and Pakistan. However, he also pointed out that though the situation was beginning to improve it would be some time before travellers feel secure. The Minister said that India's decision to concentrate on domestic tourists should help create an infrastructure that would also benefit the international tourists. Earlier, Dr de Villiers emphasised on the need for a partnership between the private sector and the Government. "The Government will do well to help industry." He also called for undertaking marketing initiatives, but added that this did not mean that funds should be wasted. In this context, he mentioned about the campaign undertaken by the British authorities. Dr de Villiers also said that people had begun to travel again and added that there was no doubt in the minds of the WTO that South and East Asia will also benefit from this trend.
