Coconut & Copra Coconut-based project in Kerala Our Bureau
KOCHI, July 23 INDIA has been chosen by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), Rome and the International Coconut Genetic Resource Network (COGENT), Malaysia for implementing the `Developing Sustainable Coconut-based Income Generating Technologies in Poor Rural Communities' project. ``This is a three-year project commencing from July 2002 to be implemented in 24 rural communities spread over eight countries,'' a release from Peekay Tree Crops Development Foundation, Kochi, said. Peekay Tree Crops will implement the project in Vayalar panchayat, Alappuzha district. The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) will be the implementing agency for the project in Pallikkara in Kasaragod district and Ariyankuppam in Pondicherry, the release added. The Indian project will comprise these three communities. The project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank. The programme components of the project include establishing and strengthening community based organisation and involving the participation of at least 300 farm-households in each community. Women and farmers are to be trained in the production of high-value products from coconut, intercropping and livestock rearing. The project also involves developing, producing and marketing of coconut-based food and beverage, coir-based products and wood and shell based handicrafts. The inauguration of the Vayalar community will be presided over by Mr Christy Fernandes, Chairman of Coir Board, on July 31, at the Vayalar Rama Varma High School, the release said.
