`Reduce fee for regularisation of buildings'

Our Correspondent

MADURAI, July 17

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here has appealed for refixing of regularisation fees and extension of time for submission of application for regularisation of buildings constructed without proper plan approval in Madurai Corporation limits.

The Chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, in a statement said that the regularisation fee, ranging between Rs 250 and Rs 800 per square metre, was high. With an estimated 20,000 such buildings in the Madurai city, only 1200 applications have been sold so far, he has pointed out.

Mr Rethinavelu further said that owners of buildings with excess construction have been asked to remit Rs 80 per square feet. This he felt should be slashed by 50 per cent.

He was of the opinion that the time limit for submission of applications under the scheme should also be extended by a month, i.e. up to August 31. The rules and procedures too should be simplified.

The Chamber has demanded that the building owners be allowed to remit the regularisation fee before March 2003. If necessary, 6 per cent interest may be charged for delayed payment.

For residential houses, the regularisation fee should be reduced from Rs 250 to 150 per square metre, for other buildings from Rs 500 to Rs 200.

For houses without approved plans, the fee should be brought down from Rs 400 to Rs 150 and for other such buildings, from Rs 800 to Rs 300.
