Walkout over Kerala Govt `failure' on copra procurement

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, July 17

THE Kerala Assembly witnessed a walkout by the Opposition in protest against the State Government's "negligent'' attitude towards the problems of coconut farmers and its failure to effectively implement the copra procurement programme.

The walkout came towards the end of a submission moved by an Opposition member which dealt with the problems being faced by coconut farmers in the backdrop of the delayed and ineffective implementation of procurement operations, leading to a crash in the prices of copra and coconut oil.

Replying to the submission, the Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gowri, said that the State Government would continue to press the Centre with the demand for enhancing the support price fixed for copra procurement.

The Minister admitted that there was some inexplicable delay in the procurement of copra during last year.

The delay was traced by her to "detection of certain irregularities'' committed by copra procuring co-operative societies during the year.
