Water Management Nabard support for Neeru-Meeru project Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, July 16 IN order to supplement finances of the State's ambitious Neeru-Meeru programme, the Andhra Pradesh Government has mobilised an amount of Rs 201.60 crore under RIDF-VIII of Nabard and the food-for-work programme to address water-related works in backward areas. The State Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, Mr P.Srinivas Reddy, in a statement said these funds would be deployed for works in backward areas covering drainage line and treatment to create significant impact in these areas. Through the Neeru-Meeru programme, the Government has brought all water conservation activities into a campaign mode to ensure convergence of efforts of various departments. Detailing the Government's initiative to bring in changes, Mr Reddy said the Government had created a water conservation mission, which is mandated to bring about sustained changes towards conservation and utilisation of water across the State. The water conservation mission has been mandated to develop a clear vision and strategy for water conservation and its sustainable utilisation at the State level. It will also prepare a time-bound action plan and initiate measures to ensure convergence of the plans and programmes of various departments working directly or indirectly for water conservation and utilisation. One of the important objective of the mission is to initiate a public debate on important policy issues related to water conservation and its sustainable use and also build consensus for policy reforms related to water and its sustainable utilisation. These initiatives supplement the ongoing massive 10-year watershed programme, which is targeted at developing all degraded and wasteland. This project is expected to cover 100 lakh hectares across the State. Thus far, about 32 lakh ha has already been treated by the involvement of 8,574 watershed committees under the rural development department. About 17 lakh ha of degraded forestland has already been treated by about 6,726 Vana Samrakshana Samithis under the Forest Department.
