ICAR award for fisheries institute

THE research team of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) here has bagged ICAR team award for outstanding research work in the field of Fisheries.

The team of scientists had developed a novel technology for processing various ready to serve seafood products in flexible retortable pouches, which can be stored at room temperature without refrigeration for more than a year, a press release issued here said.

The team included Dr T.K. Srinivasa Gopal, Mr P.K. Vijayan, Dr C.N. Ravi Shankar and Mr T.S. Unnikrishnan Nair. They also standardised technology for retort pouch processing of various other food products such as mushroom, meat products, dairy products, coconut products, sugarcane juice etc.

Dr K. Devadasan, Director, CIFT said the standardised retort pouch was made of three layer configuration of cast ply propylene, aluminium foil and polyester which can withstand processing at high temperature and pressure.

Development of this technology was undertaken as an alternative to tin plate cans, which became very expensive due to the fact that they were made out of imported tin sheets.

Moreover, heat processed food products in metal cans usually develop metallic taste on storage which was not relished by consumers. Compared to metal cans, retortable pouches were devoid of such defects and were not locally manufactured and much cheaper, apart from being user friendly.

The equipment required for pouch processing were available indigenously and could be installed at a cost of Rs 15 lakh for a production capacity of minimum of 1,000 pouches per day, he added.
