Exports & Imports Cotton yarn exporters eye Far East Badal Sanyal
KOLKATA, July 15 DOMESTIC cotton yarn exporters are hopeful that they will be able to compensate the loss of business in Bangladesh by enhancing exports to the Far East and Chinese markets. It is to be noted that the cotton yarn exports have dropped substantially since the Bangladesh Board of Revenue imposed a ban on cotton yarn export by land-port routes with effect from March 9. Though exports are currently being made from Mumbai and Tuticorin through international shipping lines via Singapore, Colombo and Kuala Lumpur, it is feared by the Chamber of Textile Trade and Industry (Cotti) that such indirect sailing cannot be continued because of high cost of transportation. It is thus decided to give emphasis to countries such as China, Korea and Hong Kong. According to COTTI sources, local exporters have already received business inquiries from China, which is currently investing heavily in fabric and garment manufacturing sectors. It is learnt that Chinese fabric manufacturers are interested in buying all types of fine counts of yarn from India. The sources, however, are unhappy that because of the unfriendly trade policy of the Bangladesh authority, they have been forced to look out for alternative markets.
