TN jeweller installs carat meter

COIMBATORE: In a bid to instil confidence about the purity of gold among customers, a Coimbatore-based jeweller has installed a carat meter in his outlet.

The machine allows the customers to know the purity/content of gold, in the jewellery bought from this showroom. The machine is considered to be a more reliable compared to the traditional `touchstone' method, as it is not considered a `fool-proof' one. The fully automatic, instant assay instrument imported from CMI, USA is meant to gauge any metal, but in this case, the finesse of gold, be it white or yellow gold, silver, platinum etc.

The trade community, while not completely ruling out misgivings in the conventional touch stone method, argue that they had no choice until now for checking the purity of gold. "We are not entirely responsible, for we entrust the work with the goldsmiths (based on mutual trust) for execution of the job, although we undertake the responsibility and market the ornament," Mr Ragunath, President, Coimbatore Jewellers Association told Business Line.
