Announcements Ranbaxy files application for IV form of Ranbezolid Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, July 11 RANBAXY Laboratories Ltd has followed up on its oral form of Ranbezolid, a drug that targets hospital-acquired infections, with an intravenous form. RLL today filed an application for an investigational new drug (IND) with the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for the intravenous use of its molecule, Ranbezolid. An extended spectrum Oxazolidinone, Ranbezolid or RBx 7644 was seen, in its pre-clinical results, to be suitable for treatment of hospital acquired infections such as pneumonia and post-operative wound infections, among other things, a company statement said. About two months ago, Ranbaxy had announced the filing of an IND application for this molecule in its oral usage form and is said to be scouting for a co-developer in the global market. Globally it is touted to be the second anti-bacterial molecule of the oxazolidinone class of compounds, the other existing molecule being Linezolid, from Pharmacia Upjohn, industry representatives said. The development of oral and IV formulations of Ranbezolid would help clinicians treat patients through IV in the hospital premises and through oral therapy on discharge. While the global size of the antibiotics market is an estimated $ 22 billion, the hospital/ injectibles market is about $ 7 billion, industry-watchers point out.
