Farmers' market inaugurated at Yelahanka

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, July 4

A FARMERS' `santhe' (market) was inaugurated in Yelahanka by the Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, where farmers can get information on the prices of agricultural commodities anywhere in the State at the click of a button.

The `santhe' concept attempts to cut out middlemen and allow farmers to sell directly to consumers.

Set up at a cost of Rs 90 lakh, the `santhe' is spread over 1.27 acre with 180 shops and offers free storage space to farmers to keep unsold goods, weighing scales and baskets.

So far, 328 farmers have been identity cards. The daily market is open to all farmers from 20 villages around Yelahanka town. Consumers can buy at prices displayed on boards.

Prices are expected to be 20 per cent more than wholesale and 20 per cent lower than retail prices.
