Research & Development German pharma co plans research in India on AIDS Our Bureau
CHENNAI, July 3 THE German pharmaceutical company, von Hoffmeister Pharma GmbH, is planning to set up a joint venture company in India to carry out research in the use of medicines derived from cannabis in AIDS therapy. Speaking to newspersons, Mr Karthikeyan Ramanathan, R&D Management Analyst at von Hoffmeister, said that the use of cannabis is an integral part of ayurvedic medications. India has vast untapped sources of herbal medications, and most important in areas of cannabinoid pharmacology. According to him, although it is very well documented in literature that cannabis has been historically used for its medical value, the Marijuana Tax Act passed in the US in 1937, banned the use of the plant parts for any medication or industry. This killed the scope for research in the use of cannabis in medicine.
