Our Bureau

KOLKATA, July 3

MR M.K. Sinha's long wait for obtaining a formal appointment letter for the post of Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) has eventually ended with the President, Mr K.R. Narayanan, approving his appointment with effect from July 1.

Mr Sinha, who was Director (Technical) of Coal India Ltd (CIL), has accordingly taken over charge of NCL.

Mr Sinha was selected by the appropriate appointing authority of the Union Government a few months prior to the retirement of his predecessor, Mr S.K Sen, on January 31, 2001. Mr A.K. Das, Director (Finance) of NCL, was asked to officiate as CMD till the formal appointment was made.

The State-owned coal monolith is also set to get another new Director with Mr A.K. Chatterjee, the incumbent Director (Finance), retiring next month.

Mr D.K. Verma, Director (Technical) of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), has been selected by the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) as Mr Chatterjee's successor.
