`No party keen on taking up fisherfolk's cause'

KOCHI, July 1

EVEN as regional parties in several Northern States have begun taking up the cause of fisherfolk, all political parties have been disowning the fishing community of Kerala, Mr P.V. Mohanan, Vice-Chairman of the National Association of Fishermen, said.

"There are several political parties that have been taking up the cause of rubber farmers, coconut cultivators and the like in the State, but fisherfolk remain a forgotten community among the political leaders," he added.

Addressing a news conference, he said that the Minister in charge of fisheries prefers to be known as the Tourism Minister.

He praised the Mandal Commission report for the due care and importance that it has extended to the fishing community. The report mentions that the fishing community is far below Dalits as far economic well-being was concerned.
