Global grain production to scale new peak

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, June 30

DESPITE a slight setback to production prospects in recent weeks, global grain production in 2002-03 could still show an improvement over 2001-02 and, indeed set a new record.

Subject to normal weather in principal growing regions of the world, on current reckoning, total grain output (wheat, rice and coarse cereals) may be in excess of 1,880 million tonnes, up from 1,854 mt of 2001-02.

Wheat output is expected gain some 10 million tonnes to reach 590 mt, while coarse grains are expected to expand by 19 mt to reach 896 mt. However, milled rice production may be down marginally to 395-396 mt.

A significant increase in European Union wheat production will be partially offset by decreases in other parts of the continent. The US is slated to harvest less wheat.

In coarse grains, China followed by Canada and the US will contribute to increase in production which is likely to be partially reduced by lower harvests elsewhere.
