Bio-tech & Genetics AP: Pact with German science park for biotech co-operation Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, June 18 GERMANY will assist Andhra Pradesh in developing the biotechnology sector in the State. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for technical collaboration was recently signed between the Heidelberg Technology Park and the Biotech Park in Hyderabad. The MoU was inked at the International Technology Conference BIO-2002 at Toronto by Dr Klaus Plate, CEO of the Heidelberg Park and Mr S. Dhawan, CEO of the Biotech Park, here. The State Minister for IT and SSI, Mr Gopalakrishna Reddy, and the Industries Secretary, Mr B.P. Acharya, were also present on the occasion. It was also decided to host the World Conference of International Science Parks Association (ISPA) in Hyderabad in 2003 to highlight the initiatives of the State Government to promote the sector. Heidelberg Technology Park is one of the three major science parks in Germany. The other two are in Munich and Berlin. Specialising in biotech initiatives, Heidelberg also has an exclusive BioPark to promote biotech start-ups. The 1.2-hectare park is currently on an expansion mode to cover 3.7 hectares housing five new buildings and adding 30,000 sq m of space for prospective tenants. The Heidelberg Technology Park is networked with six of the leading science parks in Shanghai, Canada, France, Cambridge and Panama.
