Handloom Money & Banking - Life Insurance New insurance cover for TN handloom weavers Our Correspondent
MADURAI, June 17 A MUMBAI-based manufacturing company of viscose rayon yarn, NRC, has brought hundreds of weavers in Tamil Nadu under social security cover through the Birla Sun Life's `Social Security Insurance Scheme'. Mr N. Unnikrishnan, Vice-President (Marketing), Birla Sun Life, explaining the company's objective here said the handloom weavers in Madurai, Paramakudi, Tirunelveli and Jalakandapuram regions had been covered under a free insurance scheme. To begin with about 500 weavers are planned to be covered under the scheme for Rs 10,000 each. Of them, 316 weavers comprising 62 in Salem and 244 in the Madurai region have already been provided with the policies Mr Unnikrishnan said, in due course, the scheme would be extended to the rest of the country. He said the company had plans to cover around 12,000 weavers under the scheme by 2005 and enable them produce export-oriented products.
