Telecommunications Info-Tech - Telecommunications Bharti Mobitel has few Spice top brass left Ambar Singh Roy
KOLKATA, June 15 ALMOST the entire top management of cellular service provider Bharti Mobitel Ltd has quit the organisation since its erstwhile avatar Spice Telecom Ltd was taken over by the Bharti group last year from the ModiCorp-Distacom combine for a consideration of "between $90 million and $100 million." The Delhi-based Mittals had bought out the equity stake in the company in the middle of July last year even as management control was taken over with effect from September 1, 2001. Since then, several top management personnel have quit the organisation. Among the first to leave was the then Chief Operating Officer of the company, Mr Arun Kapoor, who was initially transferred out of Kolkata. Those who have quit the organisation include Bharti Mobitel's Chief Technical Officer, Mr Shankar Halder, Chief Financial Officer, Mr Ramesh Sanka, Chief Sales Officer, Mr Nirmalendu Kar, and Chief Marketing Officer, Mr R. Mahesh. In between, the company's Chief Human Resource Officer, Mr Ram Rakesh, was moved from Kolkata to Delhi. It may be recalled that, in a news conference held here to announce the takeover, the Bharti group's Chairman & Group Managing Director, Mr Sunil Mittal, had specifically stated that the then existing top management would have a free hand to run the company as earlier. However, some of the former executives contacted by Business Line cited a change in the working environment as being among the reasons for their quitting the organisation. When contacted, Mr Deepak Gulati, Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Mobitel, said: "Ours is a large group. It is natural for people to keep moving depending upon their needs." He clarified that the new management's policies were not responsible for the attrition that had taken place. "We do not follow any policy of hire and fire."
