Reports of pest attacks in China: Govt urged to review decision on Bt cotton

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, June 9

FOLLOWING reports by the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, that serious pest attacks have resurfaced in BT transgenic cotton which is in commercial production in China, agencies in India have appealed to the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr S. M. Krishna, to immediately halt plans to introduce BT cotton in the State.

NGOs including Kalpavriksh, the Environmental Support Group, the Karnataka Coalition Against GM Crops, the Organic Cotton Growers Association, Dharwad, and the National Alliance of People's Movement, have jointly written to the Chief Minister to review the State Government's decision to allow Bt cotton cultivation in Karnataka.

The group has also presented a copy of China's Najing Institute of Environmental Studies which said, among other things, that a) there was a marked decrease in diversity of insects in Bt cotton fields; b) there was a decrease in the population of the natural enemies of the bollworm; c) population of pests other than the bollworm had increased; and d) bollworm was likely to develop resistance to Bt cotton within 8-10 years.
