Announcements Voltas Intl bags Abu Dhabi contract Vimala Vasan
ABU DHABI, June 6 VOLTAS International of India has bagged a $54-million contract from the Abu Dhabi Government to build a central cooling plant and infrastructure for the Conference Palace Hotel, being built to host the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting in 2004. Mr Shaukat Ali Mir, Regional Manager, Voltas International, told Business Line that the contract covers the installation of a central cooling plant of 12,000 tonnes capacity and related infrastructure. It also covers installation of 8 MW of generation capacity, he said, adding that the project is expected to be completed in 17 months. The hotel project is coming up in Abu Dhabi's prestigious Corniche area, close to the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). Mr Shaukat said that Voltas International has had good growth in business in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. After completion of the Dh 140-million electro-mechanical project along with an Italian firm, at the Abu Dhabi Mall last year, the company bagged two contracts valued at Dh 42 million, around six months ago, with the Tabreed district cooling company, to set up cooling plants on Maroor Road and at the Sheikh Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi city. These two projects are currently under way. Voltas International has also had a good response in Doha, Qatar, where it is currently carrying out a Dh 171-million project related to expansion work at the Al Udied air base. The company is also seriously looking at projects in Dubai, where a number of contracts are due to be awarded for mega touristic and residential projects, Mr Shaukat said. One of the few Indian firms to have a significant presence worldwide in its field, Voltas International has also bagged a 35-million euro project in France to build the air-conditioning plant for the largest-ever cruise vessel to be built. The project is due for completion in December 2003, he said. The company also has operations in Hong Kong and Singapore. The company sources its raw materials from various markets across the world and also hires personnel from all over the world. Voltas International, headquartered in Mumbai, opened a branch office in Abu Dhabi in 1991. The company cornered a niche in the UAE market for turnkey electro-mechanical permanent solutions. It has earlier completed projects at the Al Ain International Airport, the prestigious Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Abu Dhabi, the VIP Hospital at Mafraq in the suburbs of Abu Dhabi and the Medinat Zayed Shopping and Gold Centre, the biggest shopping complex in the capital.
