Rana sees need for upgradation of powerlooms

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, June 6

THE Union Textile Minister, Mr Kashiram Rana, has cautioned that as globalisation of world textile trade would have a serious impact on powerloom sector, there was a need for effective, concerted and time-bound efforts to upgrade the technology, skills of the weavers and design infrastructure, besides credit support and quality consciousness.

Addressing the third meeting of the Development Council for the Textile Industry here, Mr Rana said the National Textile Policy-2000 stressed modernisation through the Technology Upgradation Funds, cluster approach for optimum production and effective welfare scheme for safe environment and health of workers.

The Minister said that effective from January, 2002 an option has been provided to small scale industrial units under TUFs to avail of five per cent interest reimbursement of 12 per cent credit-linked capital subsidy. In order to provide a boost to technological upgradation, efforts were on to bring a capital subsidy scheme for powerloom units too, he added.

Stating that the weaving sector was by far the weakest link in the value-chain for textile, Mr Rana said the country was lagging behind other competitors in exports in this sector.
