Environment Coir Board to hold Earth Run today Our Bureau
KOCHI, June 4 AN `Earth Run' is being organised by the Coir Board on the occasion of World Environment Day in the city on June 5 to stimulate environment consciousness and public attention and action towards healing of the ailing planet. The run will be flagged off by Mr C.M. Dineshmony, Mayor of Cochin. A large number of national-level athletes and sportspersons, besides Government employees and the general public, are expected to participate, according to an official release. The Earth Run for the protection of the planet is being organised as part of the 45-day E2E campaign launched by the board on another similar occasion of global importance - Earth Day - on April 22. The objective of this campaign is to project the eco-friendly nature of coir products, particularly coir bhoovastra (coir geotextiles), which is a natural solution to the growing global problems connected with soil erosion, the release said. A workshop on coir geotextiles would also be organised on Wednesday, which would be inaugurated by the State Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gowri Amma. It is aimed at educating decision-makers at the panchayat, block and district levels in the State on the applicability of coir bhoovastra for a cost-effective and efficient solution to various erosion and civil engineering problems. Technical experts from the board, the State Coir Corporation and Kerala Agriculture University will papers on various end-use applications of coir bhoovastra. According to the release, coir geotextiles include a number of products like meshes and netting, needled felts and pads, erosion control blankets, mulch blankets, geo beds, rolls and cushions, and braided rope. These could effectively be used for slope stabilisation, sub-base layer in road construction in drain works, landscaping and a number of bio-engineering applications. The workshop will also discuss the possibilities of introducing coir bhoovastra in a number of applications connected with soil erosion and other civil engineering problems confronting the State every year. As part of the campaign, the board has initiated action in different parts of the country for undertaking field demonstration and research projects on the applications of coir bhoovastra.
