Exports & Imports `Mangalore has potential for SEZ' Our Bureau
MANGALORE, June 3 THE `immense potential' for an export boom was under the spotlight at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) open house here, where exporters took up for discussion the possibility of setting up a special economic zone (SEZ) in Mangalore. The growth of exports from Karnataka, they said, was higher than the national average and despite the `limited export activity' in and around Mangalore, the entire coastal region had the capacity to `expand'. Addressing exporters, the Union Minister of State for Textiles, Mr V. Dhananjaya Kumar, said Mangalore had always had the necessary potential for staking its claims to a piece of the global cake. The Government had cleared 13 SEZs already and a proposal had been received from the Karnataka Government for setting up an SEZ in Hassan. Mangalore, which was initially in the running, was still waiting, he said. The Additional Director-General of Foreign Trade, Mr Anup K. Pujari, told KCCI that an SEZ was like a `foreign land' in the country untouched by the laws of the land. The State Government should take the initiative and submit a proposal to set up an SEZ in Mangalore, which would give a `real boost' to exports from the region.
