NEW DELHI, June 1

THE Union Government has suspended Mr A.K. Gond, Commissioner of the beleaguered Seamen's Provident Fund Organisation, to facilitate a "free and fair" probe into the gilts scam. The order for suspending Mr Gond was cleared by the Union Shipping Minister, Mr V.P. Goyal, last week, the sources said. The SPF Organisation had given Rs 92.78 crore to Home Trade and Gilt Edge for investment in government bonds and securities in violation of the prudential guidelines.
