Power DFID-funded power supply control centre commissioned Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, May 31 IN a significant development aimed at streamlining the power supply management, the central power distribution company in Andhra Pradesh has commissioned a remote power supply control centre and a communication network supplied by ABB India. The Rs 32-crore microwave communication-based network along with the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system set up in the State with the DFID (Department for International Development), U.K. assistance, was commissioned by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Friday. The project scope encompassed design, supply, erection and commissioning of the SCADA system with a control centre in Hyderabad. The system offers operational advantages by integrating distribution automation functionalities such as automatic, remote meter reading, load balancing, trouble call management to facilitate effective distribution management. The Chief Minister has also directed efforts to bring down the transmission and distribution losses much ahead of the programmed schedule of March 2003 wherein it was proposed to cut it down to about 10 per cent. Initially, this facility is expected to cover an area of 1,555 sq km, ensuring power supply to about 10 lakh consumers in the twin cities and the neighbouring municipalities, and enable monitoring the supply online. The new facility has the capacity to cover 24 sub-stations and can be ramped up to 300 centres. Districts of Ranga Reddy, Ananthapur, Kurnool, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Medak will benefit from this system. The Government, which has initiated the process to deploy spot billing solutions across the State, has tied up for analog telematics handheld systems which extend cost-effective billing solutions at the consumer doorstep. The Power Minister, Mr K. Subbarayudu, said that as a part of the initiatives, it was planned to ensure quality supply free of voltage fluctuation to all the consumers and cut down transmission and distribution losses to 10 per cent from the present 31 per cent by March 2003. The efforts were directed towards initiating a spot billing mechanism, providing facility for consumers to check online various consumer-related information, and launching online payment facility with tie-up with various banks, he said. The Government, which has embarked on power reforms, has several ongoing externally-aided projects including those supported by the World Bank, DFID and JIDB. This new project for systemic improvement has been developed with DFID grant.
