Law to cover electronic, print media urged

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE, May 30

THE Chairman of the Press Council of India, Mr K. Jayachandra Reddy, emphasised the need for either a comprehensive law covering the electronic and print media or a separate enactment for the electronic media, as it was not under the purview of any law at present.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Reddy said that it would be prudent to have a separate law for that sector, as the `ethos and ethics for both the media is the same and both should enjoy their freedom responsibly'.

He conceded that there was a move to bring the visual media under the ambit of the current law some time back, but it had since been given up.

The Chairman lamented that the Council did not have any `teeth' as the current law did not empower the Council suitably. The Council, he said, was urging the MPs to come out with a legislation empowering the Council with punitive powers, but nothing has been done so far.
