Meet on disposal of solid waste

IN its bid to sensitise local groups, communities and Government officials on the hazards of burn-based technologies for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW), the Civic Aviation Group (CAG) of Chennai has convened a meeting here on June 1.
With the accumulation of huge amount of waste, and with no accepted waste management practice, the Governments are looking for various options for disposal of municipal solid waste. One such consideration is generation of energy.
A CAG study has revealed that the nature of Indian garbage was not suitable for generating energy, as the waste was high in organic matter and low in calorific value. But to generate energy, a high calorific value was needed.
In adopting the basic process of burning municipal solid waste (which is not properly segregated) to generate energy, the emission of highly toxic substances, known to be highly dangerous to environment and health, cannot be ruled out.
The CAG has developed a `Campaign Resource Pack' highlighting this information in the form of booklet, posters and fact sheets.
These are to be circulated during the June 1 meeting, which has been co-organised with Citizen's Voice Club.
