BANGALORE, May 30

THE Coffee Board of India has announced that the second batch of the post-graduate course in coffee quality management will commence in July. The three-month course in cup tasting will equip students to taste and test coffees for exporters, roasters and growers to benchmark their coffees in the international market. Cup tasting, the art and science of identifying the quality of coffee on the basis of its acidity, flavour, body and so on has suddenly gained importance with the coffee industry facing stiff competition and price pressures in the global market.

Most of the students from last year's batch (of nine students) have been absorbed by various exporters and roasters to offer in house consultancy on coffee, said Dr K. Basavaraj, Deputy Director, Quality Control.

The quality department also offers short-term courses for growers and exporters in coffee quality including tips on cup tasting. The department has already received 20 applications for the next batch, though only 10 are expected to be accommodated.
