Corporate governance centre to have global tie-ups

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, May 29

THE Centre for Corporate Governance has sought to establish linkages with global institutions, including those in Commonwealth nations, which work on various aspects of corporate governance. The idea is to evolve what Dr Madhav Mehra, President of the World Council for Corporate Governance, feels will be a consolidated means of meeting "shared objectives''.

The chief aim of the centre is to enhance the ways of functioning of corporates as well as to improve the credibility of stock exchanges. This, it is pointed out, will necessitate advanced research on principles of good governance and dissemination of information.

Overseas linkages are considered important in the context of the best international practices, an area that is being studied by the World Council for Corporate Governance as well. The latter aims to become a leading provider of information on this subject to boards of directors, investors, fund managers, policy designers and academicians.

As part of its agenda, the council seeks to facilitate dialogue between various stakeholders and exchange knowledge on crucial developments related to governance practices.

Dr Mehra, who is also president of World Environment Foundation, is currently in India in connection with the fourth World Congress on Environment Management. The congress will focus on critical aspects of environment protection, including the responsibility of institutions and corporates.
