HYDERABAD, May 29

CITIZENS in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad will have to cough up from June 1 nearly double the bill they are now paying for water usage.

As per the hike announced by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the minimum monthly charges for consumption of up to 15 kilolitres per month (KLPM) will be Rs 90 against the earlier Rs 55.

The revised rates effective from June 1 will also mean an upward revision to Rs 6 per kilolitre for consumption between 15-30 KLPM and Rs 10 per kl between 30 -200 KLPM. The existing rates were Rs 3.75 KLPM and Rs 6 per kl for the two categories respectively.

The decision to hike the tariff taken at the meeting of the HMWSSB on May 24 would result in total revenue of Rs 15 crore per month, up from Rs 8 crore the Board has been collecting so far. The last tariff hike was affected in February 1997. Since then, operational costs such as power, chemicals, pipes, fuel, servicing and maintenance etc. had gone up considerably, said an official spokesperson of the Board.

In neighbouring municipalities such as Malkajgiri, Kapra, Serlingampally, the monthly slab rates for water are Rs 100. The Board studied the tariff structure being followed by these bodies, before finalising the new rates, the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile the revised tariff announcement of the HMWSSB came in for sharp criticism from the Opposition parties - - the Congress (I) and Majlis Ittehadul Muslemeen (MIM), and the Left parties.
