Environment Logistics - Roadways Laying roads with plastic waste Our Bureau
MADURAI: The Department of Chemistry, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, here is making an attempt to lay roads using bitumen with plastic waste. According to Dr R. Vasudevan, Head, Department of Chemistry, a ban on use of plastic could not be an answer to waste disposal. Western nations have experimented with virgin polymers in laying the roads. This is the first time that an attempt is made to put used plastic to better use. After certain laboratory tests, a road has been laid within the college premises. Dr Vasudevan said the road did not get washed away during the recent rains. The strength of the mixture increased by 50 to 100 per cent compared to pure bitumen. For laying a 10 sq. m road, 34 kg of bitumen was mixed along with 1.5 kg of waste plastic. While the mixing process had been tried out in laying the roads manually, attempts were being made to improve the technology for adoption in all types of roads, he said.
