Cars April car sales pegged at 33,256 Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, May 23 STRONG sales of mid-size hatchbacks helped the country's passenger car sales in April 2002 reach 33,256 vehicles, data released on Thursday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed. According to a new style of classification by SIAM, which did not provide comparative figures for last year, the Maruti 800 has been spun off into a separate segment called Mini car (with a length of up to 3,400 mm). In this category, Maruti Udyog was the only player and it sold 7,180 cars, the data showed. In the compact hatchback car segment, which has the highest level of competition now, 19,077 cars were sold while 6,569 mid-size sedans were sold in April. The data showed 37 Executive cars (with a car length in between 4,501 mm and 4,700 mm) were sold and 390 Premium cars (with a length between 4,701 mm and 5,000 mm) were sold during the month. Three luxury cars (with length of over 5,001 mm) were also sold during the month, the data showed. SIAM data shows that 2,661 light trucks and 4,941 heavy trucks were sold in the month. Three-wheeler sales in the month have been pegged at 16,923 units, while moped sales have been counted at 26,193.
