Airlines Air accidents on the rise Our Kolkata Bureau
THE number of accidents involving aircraft, particularly cargo flights, that land short of the runway increased significantly in 2001, according to the annual safety report of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Such short landings, according to the report, were key factors in last year's 21 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of aircraft approach and landing accidents. Despite this, however, 2001 was the safest year in the past decade. This is because, as explained, the operational loss rate for western-built jets dropped from 1.1 per million sectors flown in 2000 to one per million sectors flown in 2001. In terms of per million flying hours, the loss rate declined to 0.54 from 0.59. And half as many people died in accidents involving western-built jets last year than in 2000. That was despite the loss of three US airliners on September 11.
