Rubber export target at 30,000 t

Our Correspondent

KOTTAYAM: The Government has targeted to export 30,000 tonnes of rubber during the current financial year, Mr S.M. Desalphine, Chairman, Rubber Board, has said. Last year the Board aimed at exporting 20,000 tonnes, but it could achieve a physical target of only 7,000 tonnes only.

The prerequisites for rubber export were quality, consistency and regular supply, he said, inaugurating a State-level campaign to popularise the modern techniques of reducing the cost of production and improving the quality of rubber.

The campaign, which will last for a month, consists of 5,000 group meetings to be held at various centres in Kerala is said to be one of the biggest mass contact programmes ever held in the field of agricultural extension. It aims at interacting with a lakh of small growers in the State.

Mr Desalphine also called for a total re-orientation of the rubber- processing sector to equip small growers to produce quality rubber for the global market.

Dr A.K. Krishna Kumar presented the theme of the campaign meetings and broadly touched all salient aspects of the aims and objectives of the contact programmes organised by the Board.
