Cashew Cashew export value dips G.K. Nair
KOCHI, May 13 EXPORTS of cashew declined by Rs 88 crore during the last fiscal, despite a rise in the volume. An estimated 98,316 tonnes, valued at Rs 1,790 crore, were exported during April-March 2001-02 as against 81,657 tonnes worth Rs 1,878 crore in the previous fiscal. While the volume of exports increased by 16,659 tonnes, in terms of value there was a steep fall, Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPC) sources told Business Line on Monday. They said the decline in unit value during the fiscal brought down the earnings. At the same time, there was an increase in demand due to fall in prices, they said. When the prices of cashew kernels went up, consumers of certain segments in the importing countries moved away from it to other nuts. Now, they were reverting to cashew, the sources said. Besides, there was demand from some non-traditional markets also. Use of cashew in food and confectionary industry was picking up, the sources said. Promotional activities, especially projecting the nutritional value of cashew kernels and its advantages over other tree nuts, would enhance the exports both to traditional and non-traditional markets, they said. During the last fiscal import of raw nuts dropped to an estimated 1,97,891 tonnes valued at Rs 534 crore from 2,50,962 tonnes valued at Rs 962 crore in 2000-01. There was a decline in the unit value of raw nuts also, they pointed out.
