Kerala: Fish workers' caravan rolls in

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 12

THE publicity caravan mounted by the National Fish Workers' Forum rolled in here from Umargaon in Gujarat where it was flagged off.

The caravan was flagged off on May 1 with a view to mobilising public opinion on the circumstances leading to a call for countrywide agitation being launched by the National Fish Workers' Forum for pressing a 42-point charter of demands.

The caravan will culminate at Adimalathura in the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram district on May 14.

A public meeting will be organised at Adimalathura to coincide with the occasion.

The meeting will be addressed by the Fisheries Ministers of Kerala and West Bengal.

The indefinite countrywide agitation will be launched simultaneously in New Delhi, and in those States bordered by sea on any side, on July 25.

The various demands that the forum will highlight include a three-month ban on monsoon trawling in all States, implementation of the Murari Committee's recommendations, ban on import of fish, grant of subsidy for kerosene and diesel used for fishing purposes, enactment of a unified law for inland fishing and modernisation of fish markets.
