New Horizons in India via joint venture

Vipin V Nair

NEW DELHI, May 8

THE world's largest independent IT training company, US-based New Horizons, has finally entered India, at a time when domestic computer education market is struggling in the wake of global technology meltdown.

New Horizons is setting up operations in India through a joint venture with Shriram Global Technologies and Education Ltd, a Shriram Group Company. ``We plan to have 100 centres in the country over the next three years with an investment of Rs 25 crore,'' said Mr Robert G Shaw, Senior Vice-President, International Operations of New Horizons.

New Horizons would compete with companies such as NIIT, Aptech and SSI in India to attract students, who have of late shied away from private computer education centres after massive lay-offs happened in the IT sector due to the economic slowdown.

The Indian IT education market witnessed a major slump in the last one year, severely affecting companies engaged in the training business. However, many, including New Horizons, are optimistic of a turnaround in the market in the coming months.

According Ms Sukanya Bharat Ram, Director of Shriram Global Technologies, the financial details of the joint venture are being worked out. However, she said the Indian partner would hold majority stake in the venture. ``We will have the first few centres up and running this year itself. We will have our own centres as well as franchisees,'' Ms Bharat Ram said, adding that the centres would be launched under the New Horizons brand.
