Vanishing falls

K. K. Mustafah

The beauty of Athirappilly and Vazhachal waterfalls near Chalakudy in Thrissur district is being eroded due to extensive exploitation of the Chalakudy river. Now, the proposed 160 MW Athirappilly hydel project, 400 m above the Vazhachal waterfalls, has become the main point of discussion of late. Already six dams, more than 30 drinking water schemes, 85 major lift irrigation schemes, 615 small-scale irrigation projects and the Thumpoormoozhi irrigation project rely on the river. Agencies such as the Chalakudy Puzha Samrakshana Samiti say that the proposed project would be the death-knell of these waterfalls.
