Airlines Sri Lankan airline to fly on more sectors Ashwini Phadnis
NEW DELHI, May 1 THE Sri Lankan national airline, Sri Lankan, has been granted permission to operate a thrice-a-week flight on the Colombo-Bangalore sector. This was firmed up at the bilateral air services talks between India and Sri Lanka, which concluded here on Wednesday. However, a limit of 450 seats has been set on the three flights which the airline can operate on the Colombo-Bangalore sector. The Sri Lankan airline has signed a commercial agreement with Indian Airlines (IA) for operating the flight to Bangalore, thereby ensuring that the Indian state-owned airlines also earn some revenue. Apart from Bangalore, Sri Lankan has also been given permission to operate an additional once-a-week flight offering 150 seats on the Colombo-Tiruchi sector. Furthermore, the Sri Lankan national carrier has also been permitted to operate a fifth flight on the Colombo-Delhi sector provided the flight touches Bodh Gaya, Bihar. Official sources told Business Line that Sri Lankan airline would not be allowed to operate the fifth flight to Delhi alone. "The airline can carry passengers to Delhi on the fifth flight. But there is no way that the airline will be allowed to operate the flight if it returns to Colombo from Delhi. However, while flying back to Colombo from Bodh Gaya, the airline does not need to touch Delhi and can take any route to reach the Sri Lankan capital,'' senior Government officials said. While IA operates a daily service on the Chennai-Colombo-Chennai sector with an Airbus A-300 aircraft, Sri Lankan operates services to Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi, among other cities. The thrice-a-week Sri Lankan airline flights to Delhi and Mumbai are code share flights with Indian Airlines. The Sri Lankan carrier started operating a daily service on the Thiruvananthapuram-Colombo sector, up from five flights a week on the sector, from March 31.
