Software IKM software runner-up in CSI sweepstakes Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 1 SEVANA, a software package developed by Information Kerala Mission (IKM), a State Government agency, has been declared runner-up in the `Best IT Usage' sweepstakes instituted by the Computer Society of India for 2001. Sevana has been developed as a tool to help local self-Government institutions take up online distribution of a slew of social security products that are routed through them, besides computerisation of a number of registration procedures. An official spokesman quoted the Minister for Local Self-Government, Mr Cherkalam Abdullah, as saying that IKM's achievement assumes significance since winners of the recognition in the past have been established software leaders such as Infosys, C-DAC, Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant Technology Solutions and Tata Infotech. Apart from Malayalam, the software package has been made available in Tamil and Kannada for being deployed in areas along the inter-State borders. Sevana has been installed since last September on a pilot basis in Vilavoorkal, Madavoor, Amboori, Vellanad and Kattakada panchayats in Thiruvananthapuram district. It has helped these panchayats complete, within minutes, a number of transactions which hitherto used to take them hours and even days. The software package is expected to be of valuable assistance to the e-governance initiative of the State Government.
