Shipping KRL move angers Cochin Port unions Sajeev Kumar V.
KOCHI, May 1 ALL the trade unions in the Cochin Port Trust under the banner Kochi Thuramugha Samrakhana Samithy (Port Protection Committee) has come out against the proposed move of the Kochi Refineries Ltd to set up a single buoy mooring (SBM) to handle crude oil tankers outside the port waters. The Samithy leaders, cutting across party affiliations, also criticised the notification issued by the State Government in declaring Manakkodam area in Andhakarnazhi near Kochi as a minor port where KRL was planning to set up the SBM project. The union leaders were of the view that if the SBM project materialised, the very survival of the port would be in danger, as 80 per cent of the cargo handled at the port comprises crude and oil products for the KRL. Moreover, the infrastructure created for KRL such as oil berths, fire-fighting facilities, and fire float would become idle. It would also detrimental to the large number of workforce in the port. The samithy had convened a meeting last week to chalk out the future course of action against the decision of KRL to go ahead with the SBM project. At the meeting it was decided to conduct a mass rally and a protest meeting with the participation of various port users such as shippers and trade on May 17 and 21 respectively on the port premises. The leaders said that they were also planning to boycott work in oil tankers coming with crude for the refinery, if the KRL went ahead with the SBM project. The samithy had also decided to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Opposition leader to withdraw the notification issued by the Government facilitating the KRL to set up the SBM project in that area. They also urged the Centre to chalk out an amicable solution in this matter, as this was an issue between two public sector undertakings in the State.
