Coir Marginal rise in coir exports G.K. Nair
KOCHI, April 25 EXPORT of coir and coir products during 2001-02 fiscal increased marginally by five per cent in quantity and two per cent in terms value over that of the previous year. During 2001-02 fiscal 70,853 tonnes of coir and coir products valued at Rs 320.83 crore were exported as against 67,493 tonnes valued at Rs 313.66 crore in 2000-2001, according to a senior official of the Coir Board. The results are yet to be officially announced. He said coir mats had shown a substantial increase last fiscal with an export of 33,802 tonnes valued at Rs 214.60 crore as against 29,159 tonnes worth Rs 184.65 crore in 2000-01. Among the other items that have shown marginal increase are rubberised coir, coir geotextiles and coir pith. However, the export coir mattings, rugs and carpets and coir yarn declined. The improvement in coir mats, he said, was because of its functional aspect compared to other substitute products. ``Its brushing effect made it competitive. Other products do not have that kind of functional efficiency,'' he pointed. He said from April 1, the minimum export price (MEP) for coir and coir products had been abolished and now the exporters could export at the market-determined price. Besides, except for the initial registration with the board as an exporter, no other registration is required. The exporters were required to register individual contracts only till March 31.
