Move to improve civic amenities in Bangalore

BANGALORE, April 24

THE tendering process for the Rs 100-crore project to provide waterworks and underground drainage facility will be taken up by next month by Bangalore Mahanagar Palike. The project will provide these facilities to 27 new wards of Bangalore and it would be completed in three years.

Stating this, Mr P.R. Ramesh, Chairman, Standing Committee of Works, BMP, said the 27 wards had been divided into three packages of nine wards each. The tenders for the package in Bangalore West had already been finalised and those for the East and South would be done in May.

Mr Ramesh, who was reacting to questions on various issues relating to BMP's endeavour to make the programme of works for civic amenities transparent, also informed that it was possible to create `Kamagari Darpane (works mirror) along the lines of `Arthika Darpane'.

Such a `mirror' will enable the citizens to periodically monitor the progress of works in their wards. Citizens should interact with the engineers concerned to monitor the wards, he added.

To a question on the coordination among various agencies on road cutting works, Mr Ramesh said that a `road opening and restoration protocol' had been prepared last year and other organisations needed to accept it as well.

He advised the citizens to interact with their zonal officers and engineers to make sure that the protocol was maintained and that the roads were restored to their original condition within a week after cutting.

The interaction was part of such meetings regularly held with the corporators to understand civic issues better. This is part of the overall efforts of Janagraha, a platform, which promotes participative role for citizens in planning civic facilities.
