Industry Associations FICCI pact to promote sports Our Bureau
The Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Ms Uma Bharti, with the President of FICCI, Mr R.S. Lodha, at an open house on `Public-private partnership: Roadmap to excellence in sports in India' in the Capital on Wednesday
NEW DELHI, April 24 THE Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has signed a MoU with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to encourage and boost private sector participation in sports. With the signing of this MoU, FICCI will spur the corporate sector to work towards promoting sports, FICCI said. The primary objective will be to deal with the financial constraints afflicting the sports sector, FICCI said. In addition, there is an urgent need to give a fillip towards developing institutional models to cater to sport science, sport medicine and sport psychology. The salient aspects of the MoU are: identification of opportunities to increase partnership between Indian industry and sports administration, encourage the sports federations to market their events to attract more private participation, and help industry participation in sports to optimise their investments in sports sponsorships. As part of this understanding FICCI's role will be that of a facilitator. Under the MoU, FICCI and SAI will bind themselves together for a period of three years from April 1, 2002 to March 31, 2005. FICCI will supplement SAI's efforts at national camps preparatory to Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2002 and Olympics in 2004. In her special address to the open house on "Public-private partnership: Roadmap to excellence in sports in India'', organised by FICCI, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Ms Uma Bharati, said, "the need for cooperation between the Government and the corporate sector to promote sports in the country and develop excellence at international levels has been felt for quite some time now. Developing countries like India do focus on areas like infrastructure, industry and agriculture. Therefore, a collaborative effort is needed geared up between the corporate sector, Central Government and SAI to promote sports excellence in the country.''
