Infrastructure Govt initiative on genomics attracts good response Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, April 24 THE Union Health Ministry's initiative on genomics has attracted 200 project proposals from various institutes and researchers across the country. Of these, the Ministry is planning to fund at least 100 through a separate Rs 50-crore fund it had set up for promoting research and creating infrastructure facilities in genomics. According to Dr N.C. Ganguly, Director-General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), already four centres for molecular medicine have been cleared under this initiative. Similarly, five medical colleges in Karnataka would be given diagnostic facilities. The Health Ministry is also firming up plans to set up a transgenic animal facility to give a push to biomedical research and genetic studies. Similarly, a first grade national primate breeding facility is being established in Mumbai. The Ministry is taking a proactive role in supporting drug and biomedical research in the country, both by the corporate sector and the research institutes. It has established eight centres in the country where clinical trials for drugs can be done, Dr Ganguly told newspersons.
